Saturday, Sept. 25th: 6th Annual West Side Tenants’ Conference!

Every year hundreds of tenants throughout the West Side come together for one big gathering to attend informative workshops, empowering trainings, and hear special addresses by movers-and-shakers in the world of affordable housing.

Come out this Saturday for the 6th Annual West Side Tenants’ Conference that WSNA co-sponsors with Housing Conservation Coordinators, our local elected officials, and tenant advocacy groups.

What: 6th Annual West Side Tenants’ Conference
When: Saturday, Sept. 25th, 9:30am-4pm
Where:
Fordham University School of Law at Lincoln Center (140 W. 62nd between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues **note this is not the same location as last year’s conference)

SCHEDULE:
9:30am-10:30am – Registration & light breakfast
10:30am-11:15am – Opening & keynote address
11:15am-12:30am – Morning workshops
12:30pm-1:30pm – Lunch
1:30pm-2:45pm – Afternoon workshops
2:45pm-4:00pm – Closing panel

At the conference there will be 15 workshops to choose from:

    MORNING WORKSHOPS:
    1. Housing benefits for seniors
    2. Obtaining repairs
    3. Go green at home: saving $$$ on energy bills
    4. Using the new legislation to stop illegal hotels
    5. Tenants’ rights in foreclosure
    6. The politics of affordable housing & development
    7. Understanding the Rent Guidelines Board (RGB)
    AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS:
    1. Organizing an effective tenant association
    2. Finding affordable housing
    3. Overview of Housing Court
    4. How to lobby for change
    5. Public housing rights
    6. Major Capital Improvements (MCIs)
    7. Avoiding/dealing with bed bugs
    8. Navigating the DHCR

FREE conference with FREE light breakfast and lunch.

SERVICE TABLES: At this year’s conference two groups will be providing advice on rental arrears and SCRIE/DRIE applications.

Rent Arrears Assistance: Housing Court Answers (HCA) will be providing information on rental arrears help available on a first-come, first-serve basis and can help with the applications to the available programs. Tenants are encouraged to bring proof of residency and proof of income. You can also call HCA anytime 9am-5pm to get advice over the phone at 212-962-4795.

SCRIE/DRIE Application Help: Assembly Member Gottfried’s Office will be providing advice a first-come, first-serve basis on how to fill out SCRIE and DRIE applications. Tenants are encouraged to bring proof of residency and proof of income, but this is not necessary to get help. To find out if you are eligible and the specifics documents needed for proof of residency and income, please read through the application directly here.

State Senator Liz Krueger and Assembly Member Richard Gottfried will deliver the morning keynote address on our illegal hotels victory & next steps in the fight.

The closing of the conference will feature tenant leaders from across NYC highlighting other recent victories. Celebrate with us as we get fired up to win big for tenants in the coming year!
